Week 9 Reading and Writing

 Week 9 Reading and Writing

This blog post will be a review of my work that I have done so far in all of my reading weeks. As there has been a lot to read and write about I feel I have learned a lot about different aspects about making games and that I'll be able to recall certain aspects. I think game development is very fascinating and that these reading weeks help in contributing to my knowledge on how to piece together a game.

Starting right at week 1 we had to read about Game Design. Before I had read anything I only knew common knowledge about game design such as it is not an easy task to create a functional game. In this week I learned about the definition of what is game design. This week I gave my thoughts about how I feel that games are not as simple as "play activity with rules" and then I gave reason for this. I think my main reason was that a game has to immerse you into the story rather than focusing mainly on rules.

Next week in week 2 we learned about Game Elements. In this reading week we learned about game elements and this is where we learned about making prototypes for our game. This is one of my more favourite weeks as I could learn about prototyping games and that not all prototypes have to be done online and some can be done with pen and paper with a bit of creativity. I enjoyed the video I watched that week where they made a ping pong prototype with paper.

In the next week in week 3 we learned about MDA. Within this week we learned about MDA which stands for Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics. I remember giving example of each of them and how they work when implemented into games and I gave examples of game that I play where each of these apply. Also reading the articles this week helped me further in identifying what the MDA is and how I could apply it in my game when I create it.

In the 4th week we learned about the GDD (Game Design Document). In this week I got to learn and see what a game design document looks like and I learned that it is no easy task and that creating one of these documents is a very time consuming thing as in these documents you will be speaking about the ins and out of your game and everything that is planned for the game and how it functions. I got to see example GDD's and this is the thing that gave me and idea of what a GDD should look like if were to make one. Depending on the game there will be more or less in the document.

In the 5th week we learned about Game Decisions. In this week we learned about game decision and this applies to your game because you have to make certain decision when creating it. An example I can give is what difficulty will the game be, who will the games targeted audience etc. In this week we also learned about the flow state which was a very interesting part of that reading week and I liked the reading I did on this week.

In the latest reading that I have done I learned about Game Fun. This week reading week was fairly interesting as we got to learn  about how to make players have fun in a game that they are playing. I got to see a diagram about game fun. I remember that in this week I wrote about the different types of fun such as People Fun, Serious Fun, Hard Fun and Easy Fun.
