Unity Tutorial 04 - My Experience

Image
Unity Tutorial 04 - My Experience  Another tutorial down for reading week. This tutorial was also fairly straight forward like the ones from before. I followed the instructions given and everything seemed to work so I didn't get confused much when something didn't work because it was the usual misspelling of a word in the code or me forgetting to add the code to the object. For this week I particularly found the Jump Force part of the lab most fun because it was something new again. We learned how to make our character jump which reminded me of a lot of scroll games I've played in the past such as Jetpack Joyride. I am looking forward to the tutorials to come to be able to see what I'll learn and how I'll be able to implement the knowledge I have so far to my game that I will be making for my main assignment. One issue I did run into though was the "Quiz play fetch". I ran into an issue on this task because when I put the project into my prototype 2 unity

Games MDA

Image
Games MDA Before I read the articles I had no clue what MDA meant but now I know it as the following. M: Mechanics D: Dynamics A: Aesthetic   After reading the articles I got a further understanding of what each of the elements were The mechanic in a game are way more advanced than the mechanics of a card game like uno. In a game every element in the game has a mechanic such as jumping, walking, running, text dialogue, interacting,  and more.. The Dynamics of a game are the lengths of which the machanics take place such as the dynamics of how long a player runs forward because once they stop running forward the mechanic of running forward will stop and the dynamic of standing still will take place. In many games when a character stands still the character usually has some type of effect on the character. A game for an example is genshin impact where if the player stand still their character will play with something or start dancing. The aesthetic of a game is the emotions a player get

Game Vision Statement

Image
Game Vision Statement  As I have stated in a previous blog I have decided to do my final game design on a driving game. In my past blog I roughly explained what the game would be about and some of my planned functions within the game that the player will notice when playing the game.Below I will be further going into depth about certain aspects of the game so that the player will know what the game will be about before actually getting to play the game, unless they really want to go into the game with no knowledge of what the game is about then reading beyond is pointless. Game Genre The game genre of the game I will be creating during this module will be a Racing / Driving / Platformer game. This will be the genre of the game because it will be fairly similar to a game I played before called trackmania. In trackmania you go from level to level trying to get the fastest time and you can get medals when achieving certain times in tracks. There is also a secret medal called the author m

Unity Tutorial 03 - My Experience

Image
Unity Tutorial 03 - My Experience  This blog will be about my experience doing tutorial 03. During this tutorial I probably ran into the most annoying issue I've had so far which is that my character wasn't stuck moving withing 20 meters but instead he teleported out of the border and moved infinitely to one side. I tried fixing this issue for a good bit of time but it seemed I did everything right but maybe not. A fix I thought of was making objects on the sides like a fence that the player can't cross so the playable character doesn't go off screen and use the fence as a border. Other than that issue the tutorial went fairly well with minor problems such as spelling mistakes but they were easily fixed once I noticed that I did something wrong. This tutorial was pretty fun since we got to take control of the environment. I liked that the fact when we press space we would throw our food at the animals I thought it was pretty funny and yes I chose the Pizza prefab becau

Feedback Strategies

Image
Feedback Strategies  In my read through this article it said that 21% of people avoid giving negative feedback. In this it tells me that the other 79% do give negative feedback. I don't understand why the other 21 % don't give negative feedback. I feel negative feedback is required so that people can fix issues and stop doing wrong and do better.I think negative feedback is a key aspect of improving work from people because if you don't give that feedback then the person will think their work is okay when in reality it may not be up to par with what they should be doing. Article link ( https://hbr.org/2017/05/why-do-so-many-managers-avoid-giving-praise ) In the second article I read I found an interesting word called feedforward, when looking at the article it explained that feedforward can come from anyone who knows about the task at hand. I like this because it means that you will learn about a certain objective from a person who knows a lot about it who has gone through

Game Idea Research

Image
Game Idea Research From my previous blog, I have given some thought on what I wanted to do. I decided to go with the following idea taken from my previous blog "For this idea I want the player to experience an open world like in GTA where you can drive around in the cars of your choice. In this game I want to create a map where there are coins or some thing scattered around the map. The map will have ramps and building with hidden coins. There will also be score which will award the player with coins currency which they can later use to get faster cars. An example of why you would want a faster car is not only because It's faster and cooler, but it will also allow player to get other coins that only a certain car can obtain. Let's say there is a ramp with a coin in the air. A slow car cannot reach the coin but a faster and better car can reach the coin. With the coins you can also customize whatever vehicle you have. Inspiration for this game are the stunt jumps scattered

Unity Tutorial 02- My Experience

Image
Unity Tutorial 02- My Experience  This is a blog where I will be speaking about my experience following the Unity Tutorial 02 assignment. Since the first tutorial that I did for this module I found it fairly straight forward where everything seems to flow nicely. I was able to easily follow the guide and have close to no issues when doing so. The only issues I ran into is forgetting to type "private float" and other simple spelling mistakes in the code because I try to type fast. Other than those mistakes I didn't have much trouble this week.  I enjoyed these tasks as it made my game be more player friendly. By player friendly I mean it allowed me to gain control over the vehicle like allowing me to drive with W and S and steer with A and D. This simple mechanic allowed me to enjoy the process of code a bit more enjoyable because seeing the end result was very fulfilling.  I hope the future tasks I will be doing are as fun as this one because this one was my favourite by

Game Elements

Image
Game Elements  After reading about the Game Design Research Article (1) I found myself lost and confused a lot because the writer of the post made very long and confusing words. The post also was plain and reminded me of a newspaper article. I didn't enjoy reading this article but I did find some useful info from it such as "Many design guidebooks have been written by the game industry actors working on commercial game productions".  (1) I didn't know this because I haven't really ever read any design guide books. The only guide I have really ever followed is the guide I use for things such as illustrator, unity and photo shop. When I read the second source I found myself enjoying the read more because it wasn't filled with much crazy words and it was fairly to the point. I like how the article said That a critical review of a game is a thorough and unbiased review of a game. I like this point because it gives the creator a sense of clarity of where their im

Feedback Thoughts

Image
Feedback Thoughts Article 1 : "Seven ways to crush self doubt" ( https://spencerauthor.com/seven-ways-to-crush-self-doubt/ ) In this article one point came across which said don't compare yourself to others. I partially agree to this statement but a part of me doesn't because I feel that comparing your work to other peoples work can be a good way to evolve your work and make you push and do better. I think this also gives you a sense of awareness of what different pieces of work look like and how different people perceive the task at hand. In the second point they say abandon perfectionism with which I 100% agree with. No one is perfect and nothing is perfect so don't try to create and be the impossible. There is always a way something can be improved and changed so there is no such thing as perfect.  Article 2 : "Silence the critical voices in your head" ( https://hbr.org/2016/12/silence-the-critical-voices-in-your-head ) In this article the points whi

Project "Game Brainstorm"

Image
Project "Game Brainstorm" As it currently stands I am not set on a game idea but hopefully by the end of this blog post I shall have come to a conclusion of what type of video game I want to make for my project. So for now I will be listing possible game ideas and I will talk about each idea and how I will interpret it. 4 Ideas that I have include : 1. A fishing game Yes this idea says fishing. It says fishing because I love doing it in real life especially going out on a boat and fishing. For this idea I wanted something basic where the mechanics aren't very complicated and the player can quickly understand what the goal of the game is. I want to make the player be on a boat with fish being bellow the boat in the water. The camera that the player will see will show them the ocean beneath them and the type of fish and they'll see whatever else lies at the bottom of the ocean. The things could be some magical fish or something like a sailors hat or shoe, or it could e

Unity Tutorial 01 - My experience so far

Image
Unity Tutorial 01 - My experience so far In this tutorial I was using unity guides to create a scene where I learned how to use the different tools on unity. This was where I got familiar with using tools like placing obstacles and making a vehicle move and run into the said obstacles. On my journey through this unity tutorial I would say I had a fairly good experience that didn't involve me struggling much with the tasks. When I was following along with the tasks I didn't use the video feature much but I did use it at time where I wanted to make sure I did what I was supposed to the right way and it was a way for me to see if I had the same experience as the person making the video. In my opinion the tutorials are fairly easy to follow along. I enjoyed the process and was liking how everything I did had an impact on either the scene of my "game" or the functions it had on the vehicle and obstacles. Something I enjoyed doing was testing different mass sizes on the ob

Reading about Game Design

Image
Reading about Game Design The simple definition to explain what a game is of "play activity with rules" doesn't really explain what a game is too well. In my opinion a game is way more complicated than a "play activity with rules" because I feel that a game needs to immerse you into the story or concept of the game deeply so you can enjoy the game. Also certain games don't have the rule aspect in them either especially games that are open world with limited rule sets. Also a play activity is a very simple word and for certain game it is more about the story. In my opinion a play activity really only fits in the online game category. I've never heard of the game "Three to Fifteen" and I didn't know that this was another name for tic tac toe. When I look at games I like certain aspects about the game that make it interesting to me but other people may not be as interested in those aspects of the game. This is why there is a wide variety of g

Time Strategies

Image
Time Strategies   I have reviewed my schedule and I think this schedule will serve me well because It gives me time over a full week to get things done rather than doing 6 hours of work in one sitting. I also have boomarked my semester calendar and this will be a good constant reminder that I should check I if I haven't missed any work or if I want to go and get ahead of my work. On  this post I saw great tip (https://www.canva.com/learn/time-management/ ) The tip I saw was work when you work best. I like this because if you work at those times you will be more productive and you'll probably have a better time doing your tasks during those times. This is useful for many people unless you're a night time person where it may not suit you as well because you have to wake up early for class etc. It is good though if you do this work on a friday or saturday where you can sleep in the next day. On  this post I saw great tip ( https://www.opencolleges.edu.au/blog/2020/08/11/build

Technology tools are useful

Image
Technology tools are useful As far as we know now I am a student of Creative Digital Media and saying so we know I will be using many different technology tools on my projects and assignments. In this blog post I wanted to talk about some of these tools and give my opinion on them and my semester calendar. This semester I will be using a tool called Unity3D in which  I will have the opportunity to create a 3D functional video game.I will also have to use tools such as bookmarking websites on google so I can find my work sites much easier. I am familiar with bookmarking as I have already bookmarked sites on my google already such as Youtube, Twitch, Twitter, Reddit, and others. I think bookmarking is a very simple, useful and effective tool to reaching your most favourite and important sites that you may need access to a lot. Another tool I am using is this blog that I am typing in as this will be a good way for me to get feedback and it's a place where anyone including me can go l

Assignments in Multimedia Development

Image
Assignments in Multimedia Development In this blog post I would like to share my thoughts and opinions on this semesters way with assignments. I am very much appreciative of how the assignments work this semester because it gives me the freedom of doing them when I can and that I can get ahead of them if I really want to so that I would have less work to do in the future. I also like the concept of commenting because this allows other students to review your work and it will open your work to wider audience where you can receive helpful tips that you can apply to your future projects and assignments. What I also found interesting was the Wikipedia trails because it is a fun concept where you roam the Wikipedia of something that interests you and you can end up on something completely different and it creates an experience and it's a quick way to learn about different things that you might not have known about before. I also like that there is freedom of doing extra tasks which will
